The new TV season is upon us and just like every year there are lots of new shows. Which shows are worth devoting your time to? Well, hopefully this column will help you decide the answer to that question. Here are some of the shows I think will be worth checking out.
Unbelievable (Netflix) – This limited series follows Marie Adler (Kaitlyn Dever), a teenager who is sexually assaulted by an intruder. Though no one believes her, they soon learn that she’s the victim of a serial rapist. When Marie recants her story, two female detectives (Merritt Weaver and Toni Collette) follow evidence that could reveal the truth. Based on a true story. Premieres September 13.
Bluff City Law (NBC) – Jimmy Smits returns to network TV in this character-driven legal drama that follows the lawyers of an elite Memphis law firm that specializes in the most controversial landmark civil rights cases. I’ve always been a big fan of Smits from his days on NYPD Blue, and I’m looking forward to checking out this series. Premieres September 23rd.
The Unicorn (CBS) – Walton Goggins (The Shield, Justified) stars as Wade in this sitcom following a group of tight-knit friends, who are trying to help Wade get back into the dating world after his wife’s passing. If you like charming comedies with some heartfelt moments, check this one out. Premieres September 26.
Modern Love (Amazon) – This anthology series is based on the famous NY Times column of the same name. It stars Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Julia Garner, and John Slattery. Each episode will tell a different story about relationships, love, and the human connection. Great cast and great creative team behind this one. Premieres October 18.
Stumptown (ABC) – Colbie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) stars in this new series based on the series of graphic novels by the same name. This show follows Dex Parios, a strong, assertive, and unapologetically sharp-witted Army veteran working as a P.I. in Portland, OR. Premieres September 25.
Watchmen (HBO) – From the creators of ‘The Leftovers’ this highly anticipated series is based on the graphic novels and is set in an alternate history where superheroes are treated like criminals. Regina King, Jeremy Irons, and Don Johnson star. HBO has high hopes for this one to be their new buzz worthy show now that ‘Game of Thrones’ has ended. Premieres in October.
The Morning Show (AppleTV+) – From executive producers Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, who also star along with Steve Carrell, comes this series about three journalists who are at different points in their careers: Aniston plays an aging morning anchor, Witherspoon is a reporter who is losing sight of her identity, and Carell is facing the consequences of sexual harassment allegations. This is Apple’s first series for its upcoming streaming service. Premieres November 2019.
Prodigal Son (FOX) – Tom Payne (The Walking Dead) stars as Malcolm Bright, a gifted psychologist who solves crimes for the NYPD by knowing how killers think — because his father is one. Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex) plays his serial killer dad. Lou Diamond Phillips also stars. Premieres September 23.
Star Trek: Picard (CBS All Access) – Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Captain Jean Luc Picard, which he played for 7 seasons on ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ and in several feature films. Not too much is known about this series yet, just that it takes place 20 years after the events of The Next Generation ended. Premieres early 2020.
