Essex County Sheriff’s Candidates

The Valley Patriot newspaper is hosting a debate for the candidates for Governor’s Council and Essex County Sheriff on October 18th, at North Andover High School.

The Governor’s Council Debate between incumbent Eileen Duff and challenger Richard Baker begins at 5pm. The Sheriff’s debate will take place at  7:30pm.

The debate is sponsored by the Laborer’s Union Local 175, Band of Heroes, The Law Offices of Sheehan, Schiavoni, Jutras and Magliocchetti, LLP, State Rep. candidate Oscar Camargo, and Sullivan Insurance.

The current Sheriff of Essex County is Frank Cousins (a Republican), who has chosen not to seek reelection. There are four candidates seeking the position that pays approximately $150,000 per year. The Sheriff’s office is a six year term; that’s longer than the president and the governor.

After a hotly contested Democratic Party primary that eliminated five other candidates, Lynn Police Chief Kevin Coppinger emerged victoriously as the Democratic nominee. To learn more about his candidacy visit his webpage at: coppingerforsheriff.com

On the Republican ticket, Anne Manning-Martin is the party nominee as she defeated four other candidates to have her name on the November final ballot. Manning-Martin is currently serving as Deputy Superintendent with the Department of Correction and a City Councilor-at-Large for the City of Peabody. You can learn more about Anne on her webpage: anneforsheriff.com

There are two independent candidates running who had no primary, as unenrolled candidates do not face primary opposition and only need signatures to have their name appear on the final ballot on November 8th.
They are: retired State Trooper Mark Archer and former County Commissioner Kevin Leach.

Mark Archer is a practicing attorney, and a former Massachusetts State Trooper. After nearly three decades of service in law enforcement and private legal practice, this is his first time running for public office. Archer has been married for 35 years, the father to two grown children, and grandfather to a baby girl. He was born and grew up in Lynn where he and his wife raised their children. Archer comes from a law enforcement family. You can learn more about Mark on his webpage: markarcherforsheriff.com.

Kevin Leach is a former Essex County Commissioner and was responsible for turning in and testifying against former Sheriff Charlie Reardon, who spent time in federal prison as the result of Leach’s testimony.

The debate will be a free flow of discussion between the candidates with no timer and no moderator interruptions unless one candidate is monopolizing time or is not answering a question.

Debate moderators will be Valley Patriot publisher Tom Duggan and Atty. Paul Magliocchetti of Sheehan, Schiavoni, Jutras and Magliocchetti, LLP Attorneys at Law.
