Haverhill Mayor Receives Bequest for City’s Law Enforcement

May – 2012

Mayor James J. Fiorentini is pleased to announce that the City of Haverhill has received a bequest from the Elmo D’Alessandro 1996 Trust in the amount of $357,382.60. This bequest can only be used for law enforcement purposes.

Mayor Fiorentini presented this bequest to the City Council for their acceptance at Tuesday night’s meeting- all gifts to the City must be accepted by the City Council.

“Elmo D’Alessandro was a Haverhill success story,” Mayor Fiorentini said. “He was born to Italian immigrants from Abruzzi, Italy and his father opened the Lesande Shoe Company in Haverhill. After serving in the Air Force during WWII, Elmo returned to Haverhill, ran Lesande Shoe and later opened D’Alessandro Realty. He also was one of the founders of the First Bank and Trust of Haverhill.”

“As the son of Italian immigrants who also lived and worked here, I am particularly touched by Mr. D’Alessandro’s gesture of appreciation to the City of Haverhill. I will work with Public Safety Commissioner Alan DeNaro to find the best use of this gift that would honor Mr. D’Alessandro’s wishes.”
