K of C Building Damage, Fall Events – Georgetown Today with Lonnie Brennan

Lonnie Brennan, Georgetown, MABy: Lonnie Brennan – September, 2013

“It’s more than just a building,” Past Grand Knight Bert Hanlon said as we were cleaning out some of the tables and chairs and scattered items from the Knights building on Main Street, “it’s been a resource to so many groups.”

The Knights of Columbus building on Main Street suffered water damages this past winter when outside air temps dipped below 17 degrees, and howling winds resulted in a freeze-up, and resulting water damage from the fresh water feed to the building. The result: damage to walls, floors, closets, cabinets, doors, trim work, appliances, well, you get the idea.

In the past, the building has been a resource to various boy and girl scout groups, brownies, prayer groups, men’s groups, and has been used by groups from St. Mary’s Church, the Kiwanis, the American Legion, the Historic Society and many other non-profits, not to mention family gatherings as well as Christmas events and regular meetings by the Knights of Columbus.

After much delay, it appears re-construction and extensive required upgrades will be taking place in the near future. When re-opened, this place should sparkle. If your group needs a nice small hall with plenty of parking and great access, stay tuned to updates at www.FrankMeaderCouncil6064.org or just contact me, or one of the members.

Georgetown Events and Such

Don’t miss the Open House at the Central Fire Station on Saturday the 21st from 10 – 3 p.m. Currently, one of the trucks is out of commission, but the private Erie 4 Fire Company has donated the use of one of their trucks, ‘Erie 4’, to the downtown location at this time. The Erie 4 Fire Company’s association is a private organization dedicated to raising funds and providing support to the oldest private fire company still actively fighting fires in the United States of America. Over the years, they have purchase all of their trucks from private funds, with no tax dollars, thanks to the Friends of Erie and the many community events held at the North Street fire station. Check out www.Erie4.org for details and upcoming events (suppers, bingo, Christmas Santa tour and party events).

Georgetown Days runs from Sept. 23-29 and there are many events including a huge open house on the 28th at Camp Denison (food, kid events, music, great place to take a walk, etc.), 11:30-3. Be sure to check out the many events and crafters on Sunday the 29th at the Georgetown Peabody Library. This should be a great Sunday afternoon of events. The Georgetown Historical Society will have an open house on the 28th and 29th for their Civil War Exhibit, and many other events.

The Mike Donahoe Memorial 5K Walk/Run will take place on Sunday, October 20th from the Perley School to raise funds for Melanoma treatments.

Other events will crop up in the next couple of weeks and we’ll be sure to post them to www.GeorgetownTODAY.org.

Oh, almost forgot: a Georgetown friend asked if I would pass along this ‘Special Challenge for the Fall’: Get a Jar, get a piece of paper a ‘savings card’ and stick it on the jar. This week, put $1 in the jar, next week, $2, the week after, $3, the week after $4. You get the idea. Keep it going. On Dec. 21st, you will have saved $136. Sweet. A good start. Download our savings card at www.GeorgetownTODAY.org.

“Keep the faith, stock up on food, cash, and laundry detergent (I get a lot of comments on that one…), and as always, keep sending your notes. Peace.”
