Methuen Awarded $180K Park Improvement Block Grant

Methuen Mayor Stephen Zanni and Aaron Gornstein, Undersecretary of the Department of Housing and Community Development are excited to announce that Methuen has been awarded $187,780 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding. The funds are intended to renovate the Tenney Street playground, update the equipment and making the area handicap accessible.

“With this grant, the city of Methuen will be able to not only reconstruct a playground that is widely used, but also ensure that it is accessible for all children,” said Undersecretary Gornstein.

The playground renovation will include the removal and disposal of all antiquated equipment, with new equipment installed that will meet current safety standards. New equipment will include a wheelchair accessible platform swing.

“What is important to me is that this playground has the durability to last a long time,” explained Zanni. “We have made sure that this site will be stocked with equipment that is high on quality, and low on maintenance.”

The site will include a new rubber-surface, as well wood fiber ground covering.

“The Tenney Street playground project is a model of what can be done when key stakeholders unite behind a vision for our community and work together to make it a reality,” said Congresswoman Niki Tsongas.

“In Methuen and across the Commonwealth strong local, state and federal partnerships are helping to provide means and mechanisms for revitalizing our cities and towns. A modern, safe playground will be a place for residents of all ages to build strong bonds that will in turn spur growth in the community.”

“The Tenney Street playground is not only a safe gathering place for children, but also a place where adults come together to discuss and affect changes that have great impact on public safety and quality of life in the neighborhood,” said State Representative Linda Campbell. “This is great news for the city.”
