Methuen, MA – Mayor Steve Zanni invites residents to join him for Methuen’s Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Veterans Lot in Elmwood Cemetery on Friday, December 6th.  Scheduled for 12:00 p.m., this annual ceremony features the respectful burning of approximately 5,000 flags.

“This is the appropriate and dignified way to dispose of flags that are no longer serviceable,” said Mayor Zanni.  “Our Veterans Department does an impeccable job of paying proper respect to our national symbols.”

The Veterans Department will be conducting the December 6th ceremony.  As in the past, this day has been selected to commemorate the events of the December 7, 1941, when the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii was attached by the Japanese Empire.

“This attack resulted in the death of over 2,000 Americans, and Methuen’s annual ceremony is a way to continue memorializing one of the most tragic and consequential events in American history,” said Mayor Zanni.

METHUEN TREE LIGHTING

Methuen Mayor ZanniMayor Steve Zanni invites residents to join him for Methuen’s Annual Tree Lighting at the Nevins Memorial Library on Sunday, December 8th.

“The Library was a phenomenal host last year, and we were able to light up an existing tree that could be viewed from the highway,” said Mayor Zanni.

The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a visit from Santa Claus.  Members of the Methuen High School Choral Group will also be providing songs and entertainment.  Hot cocoa and cookies are being generously provided by Century 21 McLennan & Co.

This year, Mayor Zanni has invited the local children of deployed soldiers to join him on stage for the lighting of the tree at 6:00 p.m.

“This holiday season there are a lot of Methuen families making sacrifices in the name of service to our country,” said Mayor Zanni.  “I’d love for the children of these heroes to join me during this special holiday tradition.”

The Annual Tree Lighting is free and open to Methuen residents.

METHUEN FOOTBALL TEAM ANNUAL DINNER

Methuen, MA – Mayor Steve Zanni and Arthur Nicholson hosted their 22nd Annual Methuen Football Team Dinner on Tuesday evening.  A yearly gathering of the players and coaches, Zanni and Nicholson have used the opportunity to support the team.

“Arthur and I both strongly believe in the positive impact made on the character of students who participate in youth sports,” said Zanni.  “We couldn’t be happier to support our players.”

Each year Zanni and Nicholson work with coaches and staff to honor a player who has displayed dedication and commitment to the team, while also possessing a positive, productive attitude.

The 2013 recipient of this award was Kenny Sullivan.

“We’re very lucky in Methuen to have young men who respect each other both on and off the field,” said Zanni.  “Kenny has absolutely exemplified this.”
