Methuen Salem Rotary Honors Teachers and Students of the Year

On April 3, Methuen, MA/Salem, NH Rotary hosted their second annual Celebration of Achievement Banquet at Merrimack Valley Golf Club. President Elect Trudy Lawler call it the “signature event” which “recognizes teachers, students and awards scholarships”. “It’s something that we work toward all year long”, she added.

2012-MethuenSalemRotary1Student of the Year Awards are presented to Salem and Methuen residents who are Juniors in High School. This year’s recipients were Reanna Lombardozzi of the Salem School District, Emily West Geary of the Methuen School District and Emiley Dionne of Presentation of Mary.

Teacher of the Year Awards were presented to Ellen Tanguay of the Salem School District, Lucy Nickerson of Presentation of Mary, and Jason LaPointe of the Methuen School District. Methuen High School Principal Jim Giuca called Mr. LaPointe a “fourteen year veteran of Methuen High School” with “solid performance”. Mr. LaPointe’s colleagues also commended him for his “willingness to assist his fellow teachers”.

The Rotary awards three scholarships of two thousand dollars to Methuen and Salem residents who are seniors in high school. This year’s recipients were Kristina Carlson of Salem High School, Jessica Chaya of Presentation of Mary, and Michelle Abou-Raad of Central Catholic. In her speech at the annual event, Methuen’s Miss Abou-Raad commented on her commitment to “the Rotary’s mission of ‘Service above Self’.” “I believe children are the future of society; therefore, they need to be educated and fostered in order to make a difference. I cannot be any more grateful for the success of this promising program, and I cannot wait to see it continue even after I graduate from Central Catholic” said Miss Abou-Raad.

Rotary board member Veronica Calixto said, “While the club has done this for over 30 years, this is the second year that the club has hosted this event to celebrate with the honorees. It’s great that we can honor students and teachers for their outstanding community involvement.”
