Readers and Advertisers Donate $3,450 to Dan Coady Memorial Scholarship

Last year Dan Coady of Coady’s Towing and Garage Service in Lawrence was struck and killed on Rt. 495. Within two days, one of our readers, Al Veilleux showed up at the Valley Patriot office and said he wanted to donate $500 to a scholarship at the Valley Patriot BASH in Coady’s memory. This year, Veilleux showed up again and said he wanted to keep the memorial scholarship alive and donated another $500 in Dan’s memory.

coadysThanks to donations from the following individuals, The Valley Patriot was able to award two students who attended the Thomson School in North Andover (Where Dan’s kids go) a check for $1,725 each.

Donating to this scholarship were:Al Veilleux- $500, Frank Coady Family -$500, Kate Callahan (Callahan Heating) $500, Mike Buco and Sons Construction $500, Heather Mariani-$300, Ken Deluca- $100.00, Frank Quintanna, (Quintanna Supplies)- $100, Brian Genest- $100, Patrick Robb-$400, Joe Cafiso-$200, Joyce A. Ratcliffe Mullen- $100, North Andover Town Moderator Mark DiSalvo, $100, and Jessica Leigh-$50. for a total of $3,450.

This year’s Dan Coady Memorial Scholarship winners were Hannah Phelan and Joe Valentino of North Andover.

Hannah Phelan – A current senior at North Andover High School, Hannah attended the Thomson Elementary School and currently has a 4.54 weighted GPA and has taken mostly honors classes in high school as well as 3 Advanced Placement classes.

As of right now, Hannah hasn’t decided what school she will be attending, but her current top choices are Bates, Boston College and Villanova. She is interested in majoring in biology and wants to be a genetic counselor.

Joe Valentino – A senior at North Andover High, Joe volunteers his time in the Best Buddies program, was the lead fundraiser for annual Wrestle ‘Lympics event, (2017 to Present). Recruited high school wrestlers from several communities to participate in annual fundraising events, solicited local businesses for donations, contacted professional sports organizations and received donations to be raffled during events, created themed baskets to be raffled off at events. Joe also Emceed raffle events and raised over $6,000 for North Andover Best Buddies organization this past year. Was ambassador for Summer Bay State Games, (2017 to present), promoted all sports of the Summer Bay State games throughout North Andover.

Both students have yet to decide what college they are attending in the fall. ◊
