Tsongas Presents YouthBuild Lawrence with $1.1MIL Check

Tsongas presents yet MORE Grant Money ($1.1 million) for Lawrence

Niki Tsongas LAWRENCE, MA – On Thursday, September 27th, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas participated in a check presentation to YouthBuild Lawrence, a community-based alternative education program that provides vocational and classroom training to at-risk youth ages 16-24.

In August, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis announced that $75 million in YouthBuild grants was being awarded nationally to help out-of-school youth earn a high school or GED diploma while learning critical skills in construction, healthcare, information technology and other fields.

The grants ranged from $700,000 to $1.1 million and were awarded to 74 YouthBuild programs in 28 states and the District of Columbia.

As part of this process, YouthBuild Lawrence was awarded a grant of $1.1 million over three years.

Congresswoman Tsongas strongly supported YouthBuild Lawrence’s grant application.

Thursday’s check presentation took place at a single-family home that was built by a previous class of YouthBuild students.

The home will be sold to a low-income, first-time homebuyer. A previous YouthBuild participant served as general contractor of the project.
