Brigid Gaffny of North Andover to Receive the Dan Coady Memorial Scholarship at Annual BASH!

Every year The Valley Patriot newspaper hold an annual Charity BASH where we raise money for local students going to college. This year is our 20th Anniversary and we are raising funds for eight high school students in the Merrimack Valley going to college in the fall.

DAN COADY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Brigid Gaffny

Brigid Gaffny, a proud sixth generation North Andover resident who attended the Thomson School from Kindergarten through fifth grade. Brigid has been chosen for the Dan Coady Memorial Scholarship at this year’s Valley Patriot 20th Anniversary BASH! (March 22nd)

As a senior at North Andover High School, Brigid has excelled academically as well as athletically.

She is a member of the National Honor Society with a 3.9 grade point average and a two-sport captain on the volleyball and softball teams. As a member of the Captains Council, Brigid created partner teams to encourage school spirit, enlisted captains to make thank you cards for the custodial staff, and visited elementary schools in North Andover to share what it means to play a high school sport and be a team leader.

Volunteerism is extremely important to Brigid. She has volunteered hundreds of hours coaching young athletes in North Andover with the Booster Club program running pitching clinics and coaching with the volleyball program.

She has spearheaded food and goods donation drives for Lazarus House. Brigid provided Christmas gifts for veterans in need in the Merrimack Valley. She has organized fundraisers for breast cancer research, melanoma research, and the Sarah Strong Foundation.

This past Labor Day weekend, Brigid participated in the A Shot For Life Baseball and Softball Homerun Derby and Pitchers Challenge, participating with some of the best talent from all over the state. She won the Pitchers Challenge and the event raised $90,000 for cancer research at Massachusetts General Hospital.

On the softball field, Brigid is a two-time team captain, two-time MVP, as well as a three-time first team all MVC player. As a junior, she hit .415 with 22 RBI’s and 2 homeruns. In the circle she had a 2.20 ERA , 167 strikeouts, and 14 wins including pitching an 8 inning, 5 hit, 9 strikeout win over 20-0 Wachusett in the Division 1 state tournament.

Brigid will continue her academic and athletic endeavors at Bates College next fall, where she will apply the life lessons of hard work, resilience, and courage learned from the Thomson School.
