Former Apple/Tesla Employee Launches Sustainable Apparel Brand in the Valley

The Merrimack Company Focuses on
Eco-friendly Manufacturing and 1% for the Planet

LAWRENCE – The Merrimack Company launched their first collection of sustainable, eco-friendly apparel and accessories designed in the heart of the Merrimack Valley. With a mission to help people “Stay Adventurous,” the Lawrence-based brand offers a collection made from organic and recycled materials for eco-conscious consumers who enjoy, or want to begin, recreating outdoors.

“I’ve always wanted to create something that gives back to the community. I left high-powered tech roles in Silicon Valley to spend a year living in an RV traveling the country, which really helped me think about the importance of local community in a new and different way,” said Ken Michienzi, founder, and CEO of The Merrimack Company. “When I returned home to the Merrimack Valley, which has a deep history in the Industrial Revolution, the idea to create a sustainable lifestyle brand with an outdoor focus became apparent. We want to modernize this area’s legacy by offering apparel that is kinder to the planet.”

The Merrimack River was home to textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution, when poor environmental practices were common prior to the industry’s move overseas. Today, the river is a source of drinking water and recreational opportunities for many communities and is well known for its historic mills in key cities in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The Merrimack Company was founded in a converted mill building, powered by renewable energy, with the goal to bring fashion back to the Merrimack Valley, with a sustainable twist.

“We are laser-focused on constant improvement,” said Jerrame Goddard, co-founder and vice president of sales and partnerships. “We recognize that any product we produce, and sell will have an impact on the environment, so we will constantly challenge ourselves to find ways to minimize that impact.”

The Merrimack Company is committed to partnering with global manufacturers with ethical labor practices, while leveraging US-based businesses for screen printing and other skilled services. The brand is also a 1% for the Planet member, donating a portion of proceeds to the Clean River Project, a non-profit based in Methuen, Mass., working to protect and preserve the Merrimack River.
