At the heart of Lawrence, Massachusetts, the Lawrence Public Library buzzed with excitement on December 21, 2024, as Olive in July Inc. hosted its annual holiday toy giveaway. This non-profit organization, dedicated to supporting disabled children, young adults, and low- to moderate-income families, teamed up with Toys for Tots to bring festive cheer to hundreds of families in need.
A Vision of Joy and Community
Eulalia Feliz, Founder and CEO of Olive in July Inc., believes the holiday season is a time to spread love and hope.
“Every child deserves to feel special, especially during the holidays,” she shared. “We started this event to make sure families who might be struggling still feel the magic of the season.”
This year’s event marked a remarkable collaboration with Toys for Tots, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve program that collects and distributes toys to children whose families cannot afford gifts. Thanks to their support, the library was transformed into a hub of joy, with volunteers from Olive in July ensuring that each child left with a carefully chosen toy.
Faces Behind the Celebration
Eulalia Feliz was joined by Andre Flobil, Director of Education at Olive in July, and a team of dedicated volunteers.
The event featured a cheerful Santa Claus booth, where children could meet Santa and take pictures, along with numerous volunteers dressed as festive characters, adding a magical touch to the day. Volunteers also organized engaging activities, complete with music, refreshments, and fresh food stations offering snacks and treats. These efforts created a warm and celebratory atmosphere, making the event feel like a true holiday wonderland.
Parents expressed their gratitude, with one parent sharing, “This means the world to us. The holidays can be tough financially, but knowing there are people out there who care is so uplifting.”
Supporting Families Beyond the Holidays
The families served by Olive in July often face challenges beyond the festive season, including financial hardships and disabilities. Events like this not only provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of inclusion and support that lasts well beyond the holidays.
A Commitment to Community
Olive in July’s work extends far beyond toy giveaways. The organization provides ESOL and citizenship classes to aid immigrant families and works tirelessly to support individuals with disabilities.
“Our mission is rooted in compassion and empowerment,” explained Andre Flobil. “Through our programs, we strive to uplift and equip families with the tools they need to thrive.”
For Eulalia, Andre, and their team, this was more than just a day of giving—it was a testament to the power of community and the belief that “we can create a brighter future for everyone.” ◊
