Paula’s Journey for Hope, A Methuen Woman’s Story

PAULAThe family and friends of Paula Stamoulis Corey are uniting to raise money to help Paula get diagnostic care and treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Paula was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, an autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body.)

Paula has numerous daily symptoms but the most severe are her daily fevers, constant pain, nausea, sleep deprivation and chronic fatigue. Paula cannot be out in the sun due to Lupus as it can make her symptoms worse. Paula was also most recently diagnosed with Erythromelalgia (a rare devastating disorder that affects the skin of the feet or hands or both causing redness, intense heat, swelling and burning pain.) Temperatures over 66 degrees can set these devastating symptoms off. Just going outside in the spring and summer can cause Paula great discomfort. Her doctors remain unsure as to why she even has Erythromelalgia. The Mayo Clinic will be able to determine what caused it and how to cure it (or at a minimum, treat it).

In addition to Lupus and Erythromelalgia, Paula also has Raynaud’s disease. With this disease, a cooler temperature change causes the smaller arteries that supply blood to her skin to narrow, limiting blood circulation to affected areas such as her hands and feet, turning them purple, white and causing numbness.

What complicates matters more for Paula is that she is very sensitive to medications making any type of treatment very difficult. In addition, any type of stress makes all these conditions flare up.

Paula is 45 years old and has been happily married to Anthony Corey for 19 years. She has lived in Methuen, MA her entire life. She is a wonderful wife, amazing mother to her two sons, and a loving grandmother. She has a very supportive network of family and friends who love her dearly. Paula has been an independent woman her entire life never asking anyone for help for anything. Paula has attended fundraisers and has started fundraisers for others in need. No matter what is going on in her life, she will always find the time and strength to help someone else in need, even if it’s just to listen.
Paula is very well known and respected in the communities of Methuen and Lawrence, having worked as a Paralegal for 22 years. She was very passionate in her work, always going above and beyond expectations. Despite Paula’s medical conditions and her doctors advising her not to work, Paula continued to work full time for a few more years. Even the last few years of her employment, she was still determined to work. Her declining health, unfortunately, left her disabled, unable to work, and heartbroken.

Paula now needs our help and our prayers and our support. Please help us get Paula to the Mayo Clinic as we feel this is her last hope. No donation is too small. To get to the Mayo Clinic, Paula will need to purchase airline tickets, book a motel for up to 2 weeks, pay for all meals, pay medical bills, medication, any testing or treatments, and pay for future medical treatment. Paula will need to report to the Mayo Clinic daily for up to two weeks, depending on the tests and treatments that need to be done.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
