Happy New Year, Valley Patriot readers
December embodies strong feelings of reflection and desire for comfort. I hope you made time to lean into the joy and jubilations in the community this holiday season. I was fortunate to spend quality time with my family this December and will remember that network of support as I enter a new year and a new legislative session.
Outside of family time, December was busy with meeting deadlines before the 193rd Legislative Session came to a close. Locally, Governor Healey signed H.5098 into law, restructuring the Lawrence School Committee.
This bill, supported by Senator Pavel Payano, Representative Frank Moran, Mayor Brian DePena and myself, redesigns Lawrence’s school committee to be composed of three elected seats and three appointed seats. I understand there has been controversy surrounding this decision.
I stand with my colleagues to support this change to promote accountability, organization and proficiency in Lawrence schools. I have read and listened to arguments on both sides of this debate. The intention to see our schools flourish is a beautiful common ground to a contentious detail. This new structure allows for the community’s choice in members to work alongside the picks of experienced elected officials. Elected officials earn their position from demonstrating their commitment to the constituents.
Please continue to trust this motive while we enter a period of fresh beginnings for our schools.
In the state, two important pieces of legislation were passed just before the year end to combat private equity greed which plagued Massachusetts in 2024. Steward Healthcare’s public derailment exposed a need for closer oversight and transparency in our healthcare market.
H.4910 and H. 5159 work in tandem to address unnecessary costs for patients, a lack of market transparency, and access to quality services. Both of these bills were signed into law by Governor Healey days before the legislative calendar reset. I look forward to the benefits our constituents will see from these two pieces of legislation. This is a strong start to a lengthy campaign.
Nationally, President Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law weeks before he steps out of office. This is a massive win for middle-class households! For more than four decades, the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) have been in place, limiting the dollar amount public sector workers saw on their social security benefits. Public sector workers will now see the full amount of social security benefits they rightfully earned.
