Spending Time in the Community

State Rep. Marcos Devers August Recap:

After the busy end to legislative session in July, the office of State Representative Marcos Devers was able to fully focus on community presence in Lawrence during the past month. With no formal legislative session planned until 2023, August provided an opportunity to dedicate 100 percent of Representative Devers’ office to constituent services. This timing turned out to be fortunate, as August represented an uptick in Lawrence residents looking for assistance. If you or someone you know has a problem in the city of Lawrence, Representative Devers can be contacted at his email, marcos.devers@mahouse.gov.

The month also included many events in the community which were attended by Representative Devers. One of the most exciting was a visit to the statehouse by Groundwork Lawrence’s Green Team, a group of Lawrence area youth who are interested in designing and leading their own environmental initiatives. The year-round program offers paid positions to high schoolers in all areas of environmental research including urban gardening, community service, local temperature reduction and more. Representative Devers was delighted to be one of several representatives who met with participating youth and held a dialogue session on environmental issues and what actions the Representative and other state officials are taking to improve the quality of life for areas like Lawrence.

Representative Devers’ office also had a booth at the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council’s Community Resource Fair. This event welcomed dozens of local and regional offices and organizations to Campagnone Common for an afternoon of awareness. The event allowed Representative Devers and his staff to connect with community members about various services available in Lawrence and the surrounding communities. Although finding local, state, or federal resources can be overwhelming, Representative Devers’ office is always happy to point community members in the right direction!

This month, Representative Devers was also present for the mural dedication ceremony for Marine Corps Sergeant Johanny Rosario Pichardo. Sergeant Pichardo tragically lost her life last August in Afghanistan while protecting Afghan and American citizens. The ceremony honoring her memory was a touching tribute to her life and legacy; Representative Devers was honored to attend and show his support for Sergeant Pichardo’s family.

Late in August, the city of Lawrence received a visit by Samuel Pereyra Rojas, the director of the largest bank in the Dominican Republic, BanReservas. At a reception hosted by Ateneo Dominican de Nueva Inglaterra, Representative Devers and other local officials stressed the need for greater economic cooperation between Lawrence and areas in the Dominican Republic.

During the month of August, Representative Devers spent his time in the community, attending events, catching up with community members, and keeping pace with all constituent cases that came to his office. ◊
