Valley Patriot Readers Contribute $10,000 for Scholarship in Memory of Dan Coady

Four years ago, one of our readers, Al Veilleux donated $500 to start a scholarship in memory of Dan Coady Jr. who was killed in tragic accident on Rt. 495 just a week before our annual BASH in 2018.

Each year Al asks that we keep the Dan Coady Memorial Scholarship going for students who attended the Thomson Grammar School in North Andover where at least one of Dan Coady’s children attended at the time of his death.

Al’s goal was to keep this scholarship going every year in the hopes that Dan’s children would be able to receive this scholarship when they graduate from High School. Last year Dan’s oldest son Patrick received this scholarship in the amount of $7,390.
That was the highest amount ever given out at the Valley Patriot BASH!

That is, until this year when we raised $10,000 for this scholarship.

Members of the Coady family were in attendance to help present the check to Cam Reiland who was chosen for this scholarship by our friend North Andover School Committeeman Andrew McDevitt.

There was also another surprise this year as North Andover Superintendent Gregg Gilligan joined us to congratulate Reiland and help us do the check presentation.
CAM REILAND

Camden Reiland is a proud graduate of The Thomson School. He has many amazing memories from attending 6 years at the historic North Andover elementary school. Some of them include early morning chess club with many of his neighborhood friends, hours of playing sports at the Kids Stop after school program and many great teachers and administrators mentoring him. Camden’s favorite memories are the Veterans Day celebrations where once he was chosen to speak and honor our countries heroes.

A senior at North Andover High School, Camden has used the lessons learned at The Thomson School to blaze a bright path. He was a 3-year varsity starter and senior captain of the soccer team. During his senior year he was awarded the MVP award. He was also named to the Merrimack Conference First-Team in addition to playing in the Eastern Massachusetts All-Star Game.

Camden is a two time All American in Track and field. He is a 4-year varsity runner and currently captain of both the indoor and outdoor track teams. During his track career he has been a part of 6 team state championships, multiple Merrimack Valley individual championships and top 6 finish in the mile at the all state championships. He currently holds the North Andover High School record in the indoor 2 mile, 4X800 meter relay, 4Xmile relay, and the Distance medley relay.

Academically Camden has excelled as well. He is a member of the National Honor Society with a 4.425 GPA. Camden was selected to receive the Abigail Adams Scholarship for high academic performance on the high school MCAS exams. His hard work academically has earned him a spot at many colleges and universities. He has yet to decide where he will attend.

Camden has volunteered for many things around the community. He has spent time helping at the elementary schools, including Thomson, demonstrating chemistry experiments with his AP classmates. He has also traveled around town to mentor elementary and middle school students as captain of his sports teams. He is proud to live and represent North Andover.
