Let the fear mongering begin. With Joe Biden’s debate debacle firmly in the rearview mirror, and presidential candidates pretty much set, both parties are now embarking on smear campaigns they hope will scare voters away from voting for the opposition.
For Democrats it’s doomsday predictions about how Project 2025, a policy initiative put out by The Heritage Foundation, will turn the US into a fascist, dystopian nightmare centered around Christian nationalism. But what’s really in it?
Some of it is run of the mill conservative policies like increased military spending, a secure border, increased enforcement of immigration laws, mass deportations and construction of a border wall. But it also includes policies that even this conservative finds troubling like its fixation on reproductive rights and reversing a 24-year-old approval of abortion pills like mifepristone.
It also takes aim at federal agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the people who provide weather forecasts and severe weather warnings.
There’s much to debate about P2025, but voters would probably feel better about it if Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts wasn’t quoted in a podcast saying that the nation is “in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”
But here’s the thing: Trump has disavowed having anything to do with it: “I know nothing about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them.”
A far troubling set of policies, that’s not being discussed at all, is the platform from the DSA or Democratic Socialists of America which boasts over 200 members in elected office including Congress.
The group openly states “we are socialist because we share a vision of a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, equitable distribution, feminism, racial equality and non-oppressive relationships.”
Among their many ideas is to “defund the police by rejecting any expansion to police budgets or scope of enforcement while cutting budgets annually towards zero, end investment in police training or facility renovations, free all people from involuntary confinement, and stop all funding of prison expansion, and close local jails.”
I’m sure this will have voters feeling safer!
They also want to pass reparations legislation and put in budget lines for reparations at municipal, state, and federal levels. If you’re worried about how we’re going to pay for all that, fear not, the DSA claims to “fight for the abolition of capitalism and the creation of a democratically run economy that provides for people’s needs.”
Apparently, they want to “nationalize and socialize institutions of monetary policy, insurance, real estate, and finance.”
They plan to bring this new political order “through a second constitutional convention to write the documents of a new socialist democracy.” Read those words again, and then consider how the news media is fixated on P2025 but haven’t even mentioned the existence of the DSA or how their members include congressional members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Jamaal Bowman, and Cori Bush.
Also missing is any comment from Kamala Harris about her opinion on the DSA and their platform. Jamaal Bowman, of fire alarm fame, just lost his primary and will be looking for a job soon, so will Harris hire him if she were to win in November?
If elected, Harris will be the most far left president in this nation’s history, voters should know where she stands on DSA policies and news media should give it just as much attention as Project 2025. ◊-
